The 6 000 sheep and some 100 cattle got stuck in the col du gandon mountain pass along with their shepherds on the night of friday 25 september after an early flurry of snow coupled with icy winds. As the climate changes the plant and animal life between elevations also changes. Yet heavy snow fell even faster than predicted and some shepherds were forced to spend the night in huts on the mountain to stay close to the animals.
Along with teams of volunteers they used snow ploughs to clear the paths and managed to get some six tonnes of fodder up the 1 900m high col.
